The WORMS are here!!!

...This goes under the (ETC.) category, I'm pretty sure.  And no, I'm not going to eat them (but don't you wanna????)

I'm calling this "take two" of worm composting.  Take one was disrupted last year by an escape plan gone awry in the dining room.  Worms. Everywhere.  I should draw you a picture (but do you really want one???)  Anyways, this time I'm doing for reals, straight-up the "right" way.  Outside.  Eventually.

Just thought I'd share the worm-love.

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle Yeah!

And somehow a hippo got in there.

Technical Difficulties

So yesterday's sketch was a total bust.  I spent like 30 minutes working on it, only to have Painter freeze and loose everything.  I tried a second time, with a new sketch, but Painter is running so slow (that, or my computer is....) that the drawing fell stagnant and gross.  I had to wait like 10 seconds in between each brushstroke while the evil pinwheel of doom spun and spun...

I'm not sure where the problem is, or how to even go about finding it.  I tried a new sketch tonight, using only one tool, and it seemed to work fine, but I'm afraid once I start using watercolor brushes it'll go nuts again.  I reinstalled Painter with no difference in could be something to do with my computer, the program, or the tablet.  No. Idea.

Tonight's sketch:  a "testing, testing, is going on" sketch.  Chris put these shelves up for me over the weekend.  They are closer to level in real life.

Pottery Pictures

Tonight's artistic product: dysfunctional pottery.
I ironed the crap out of the background sheet that came with the light tent but there are still wrinkles.  Thinking of trying poster board for the next shoot, hopefully with more success/consistency.  I was just excited and wanted to try it out.  (Thank you, Stephanie, for a great birthday present!)

So I think I might be a morning person...

...And that I might have to start getting up a little earlier to get this sketching thing done.  It's currently 10 p.m. and I am beat.

Let me start by making this clear:  I am by no means a photographer. I got a fancy camera to kind of "take notes" more than anything, but it doesn't get out much.  I don't like people looking at me when I take pictures (of them, or anything else), so that knocks a lot of opportunities out the window.
Driving to work, I've realized, can be kind of awesome in the morning.  I have mixed feelings about this time of day, I feel like I could get a lot done in the morning, if it was an option for me.  Two things most frequently get in the way of my a.m. ambitions:

  1.  I am working (or en route), and
  2. So often I'd rather be finishing whatever dream I woke up in the middle of.

So back to my camera, its function, and potential.  One thing that led me to get this camera was actually my commute to work and all the cool stuff that happens in the morning.  I don't get to see it at any other time.  I know I can get a crystal-clear shot if I stop to frame it up, focus, etc., but I have places to go, right? and other things I am actually supposed to be doing.
I feel like so much is going on in the morning when I head out--everything is stretching, waking up, getting ready.  Still half asleep, the trees and air do weird things.  My sketch today is more of a composite-action-shot.

Still taking notes, just at a higher speed, and perhaps with a slightly less-focused eye.

New paints, wahoo!!!

Just doodling, testing out some new watercolors.  I see all these people who do awesome watercolors, and I never really got into that, at least not as much as I'd like to.  I've been thinking I need to give it another shot, so I got these Sargent "Watercolor Magic paints, after hearing how great they are on SmartART's "favorites" list and I got them here:  Sargent Watercolor Magic.  Anyways, the colors are awesome--very bright, more so than shown here, but I just liked the lines and chunkiness in this drawing.  Maybe I will post some more coming up, to show how crazy these colors are.  But hey, while I'm at it here's another w/c sketch:

Note how BRIGHT those colors are @ the bottom!!  I think I am more siked about how much fun it was to draw with these than with my final drawings.  Really wasn't out for an "end-result" or product, just trying something new out.  They do neat "crispy-crunchy things" on the edges where the colored water bumps into the dry paper.  Yay, art supplies!!

Tomorrow night we're doing some great stuff in All Things Art--can't wait!  (Kind of wishing classes were a just a liiiittle longer, or maybe even twice a week, so we'd have more art time.)

Might as well draw

So yes, maybe it's way too early for this.  But the sun is shining and it's 78º outside, so I might as well grab something cold to drink and something to write with, and sit out and enjoy this.  The sun is warm and the grass is (well, almost) green.  No complaints here.

Just passing by

Thinking about perspective.  Two points way out on the horizon.  How to draw?

An old bird gets new life.

It's tough work, being a hat-bird...full of styrofoam, glued to a basket of plastic fruit and straw. It can be hard to focus...especially when one has wiggly eyes.

A Home for Turtles

A paper maché home, for clay turtles, that is.  I know I missed the past couple posts, and I will try to make it up.  For now, here's something straight from the sketchbook, where ideas get going.

Ominous Carrots

For tonight's post I'm "composting" a drawing I posted via Facebook way back in like, January.  But it's new to here, and I liked it enough to put it up here & make it all official.  Although nothing's really official unless it's on Facebook, right? So I flip-flopped.  Here're some carrots.

Adjectives for pots

Things to make.  Well maybe the "piano keys" cup, at least.  Lookin' for some "manly mugs" in my future.  And an increase in "shwoopiness," as well (none of that here, I know...).

I was working on one of the drawings I did last month and came up with this.  I need something on the right, more work on the background, I know, and some details/contrast work in the front.  Thought I'd put it up anyways though--a "bonus" sketch of sorts.   That's it for tonight....

Set o' mugs

Mug sketches.  Goal="un-boring mugs." (<-----ooh, look at all those perpendicular lines)  Now if only I could make it to studio hours...with a sketch in hand.

Had an awesome time making a mega-chicken sculpture with some students today.  Don't know if they had as much fun as I did, though--can only hope!

Symmetry sketch

Trying out the symmetry options in Corel 12 and my trial expired.  While waiting for the copy I ordered to come in, I used Corel 4 Essentials that came with my tablet.

Looking at this, I think it's pretty obvious that I'm wicked tired, but since I was slacking yesterday in the posting dept, thought I'd send it up anyways.  Trying to find time to finish some fun projects before I put them up. This one's super-half-done, but a sketch is a sketch.  On another note, I need to remember to take my camera places so I can  take pictures of pots that I'm making (a few pitchers today) and maybe that'd give me a way to step back and think about what I could do to them to make them more awesome and less "blah."

Things on my Art (and "Sort-of-Like-Art") To-do List:
• organize materials/ clear desk
• hang some prints and paintings
• finish 3 tablet projects (in particular)
• repair canvas/stretchers for unfinished painting so i can get back to painting it.  I need to cut some triangles to keep it from warping.  Too big.
• lesson plans!
• materials lists!
• throw pots that aren't boring
• library run
• garden projects to get started (need some compost!)
• there's some photos I should be if only I could remember my camera

That's it for tonight!

Yesterday's sketch

So I drew this yesterday, but didn't get a chance to post it.  Just some pots on a shelf.

I'm an engine driver

On a long run, on a long run.

Just a quick, Decemberists-inspired sketch.
